Is there evidence that this approach works?

The Stockholm Outcome of Psychoanalysis Project (STOPP) provides empirical evidence for marked improvement in those who have a significant period in psychotherapy. German research has also shown the benefit of such work as do many individual case studies.

The Journal of the American Medical Association published an influential meta-analysis in 2008 establishing the efficacy and long-term benefits of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. (JAMA vol 300,no 13)
